What a stunt performer does
A stunt performer carries out physically demanding or dangerous action for a production: falls, fights, car work, fire, wire work and anything where the risk to a principal actor is too high. Stunt performers are not extras. They are specialists who train for physical performance on camera.
On set, a stunt performer arrives with the choreography or gag already rehearsed. They work with the camera department so the action reads clearly on screen, adjust to feedback from the director and DOP, and follow the safety plan for every take.
Training and background
There is no single path. Most stunt performers bring a combination of martial arts or combat sports, gymnastics or acrobatics, driving or riding skills, wire and rigging experience, and specific disciplines like free running, swimming or weapons work. What separates a trained stunt performer from an athlete is the ability to perform these skills safely for camera: controlled, repeatable and precise under production pressure. More in how to become a stunt performer.
How productions hire stunt performers
Most productions engage a stunt coordinator first, who then builds the stunt team around the physical demands of the project. If the production needs a performer who matches the lead actor's build, has specific martial arts skills or can perform a particular gag safely, the coordinator sources and hires accordingly.
For smaller productions (short films, commercials, branded content) a single fight choreographer or action designer often takes on both the planning and the performance. That is how Battleblade works on most projects. See how hiring works and typical stunt rates.
